Main Door Vastu: Best Directions and Simple Fixes

Main door vastu — the 32 entrance positions around a house

Key takeaways

  • Every direction has good and less good door positions; no facing is automatically bad.
  • Commonly favoured: North 3–5, East 3–4, South 3–4, West 3–4 (counting each wall's 8 padas from the corner, clockwise).
  • Keep the entrance bright, clean and unobstructed — no pole, tree or staircase blocking it.
  • Door should open inward, be the largest door in the house and never be broken or noisy.
  • Most corrections are placement, colour and threshold changes — no demolition.

In vastu, the main door is judged less by the direction the house faces and more by where on that wall the door sits. Each side of the plot is divided into 8 positions (padas) — 32 in total — and a few on every side are considered good. That's why a north, east, south or west-facing house can all have a well-placed entrance. If your door is in a less favourable spot, simple fixes usually help without breaking walls.

The most common question we get before someone buys a flat is "Is a south-facing door bad?" The honest answer: it depends on *where* the door is on the south wall, not just that it faces south. Here's how vastu actually looks at your entrance.

Why the Main Door Matters in Vastu

Vastu treats the main door as the mouth of the house — the point where energy, people and opportunities enter. A well-placed, welcoming entrance is believed to support harmony and prosperity; a blocked or badly placed one is linked with obstacles and stress.

The 32 Entrance Positions

Each wall of the plot is divided into 8 equal parts. Counting along each wall from its corner in a clockwise direction (north-east → east → south-east → south → south-west → west → north-west → north), the positions commonly recommended for the main door are:

Main door vastu: each wall divided into 8 padas; favoured entrance positions are North 3 to 5, East 3 and 4, South 3 and 4, West 3 and 4
Gold = commonly favoured door positions; each side has some good spots

EastE3, E4Jayant, Mahendra (Indra)
SouthS3, S4Vitatha, Grihakshat
WestW3, W4Sugriva, Pushpadanta

Traditions differ slightly in counting and in which neighbouring padas are acceptable, so an on-plan check is better than a compass-only guess.

Is a South-Facing Main Door Bad?

No — this is the biggest vastu myth. A south-facing home with the door in S3 or S4 is considered fine, and many prosperous homes face south. What matters is the exact position, the layout inside, and what's in front of the door. More on this in South-Facing House Vastu.

Main Door Do's and Don'ts

Do:

  • Keep the entrance well lit, especially in the evening.
  • Make the main door the largest and strongest door in the house, opening inward and clockwise.
  • Use a raised threshold (dehleez) and keep the area clean.
  • Put up a nameplate and a simple toran or auspicious symbol if you like.

Don't:

  • Let anything block the door from outside — a pole, tree, pillar or another building's corner directly in line (called *dwar vedh*).
  • Place shoe racks, dustbins or clutter right in front of the door.
  • Have the door face a staircase going down, a toilet door or a lift directly.
  • Keep a broken, creaking or sticking door — repair it.

Simple Fixes Without Demolition

If your door is in a less favoured pada, or something blocks it:

  1. Threshold strip — a metal strip (often brass) at the threshold is a common traditional correction.
  2. Colour — door and frame colours suited to the direction (for example, light tones for north, wood or green tones for east).
  3. Lighting and cleanliness — a bright, clean entrance counters a lot of "heaviness".
  4. Screen or plant — to soften a vedh like a pole or corner facing the door.
  5. Inner layout — sometimes a change inside (furniture, mirrors, what you see first on entering) helps more than touching the door.

For flats where nothing structural can change, see Vastu for Rented Flats. Once the entrance is sorted, the next rooms to check are the kitchen and the bedroom.

A Worked Example

An example (not a real client): a 2BHK flat facing west, door in W6.

  • W6 isn't among the commonly favoured padas.
  • The door can't be moved (society flat).
  • Suggested: keep the entrance brightly lit, add a threshold strip, avoid placing the shoe rack beside the door, keep the first view on entering clean and pleasant, and strengthen the north-east of the flat (light, clean, no heavy storage).

These are low-cost, reversible changes — the kind most families can do in a weekend.

When to Get a Vastu Check

Before buying or renting, before renovation, or if the family has felt stuck for a long time in a new home. A check on the floor plan takes little time and can save expensive changes later. See Vastu Consultation, or book a 1:1 session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction is best for the main door?
North and east are traditionally preferred, but every direction has good door positions. What matters most is where on the wall the door sits — for example N3–N5, E3–E4, S3–S4 or W3–W4.
Is a south-facing main door bad in vastu?
No. A south-facing door in the right position (commonly S3 or S4) is considered fine. The belief that all south-facing homes are bad is a myth.
Can main door vastu be corrected without changing the door?
Usually yes — with lighting, a threshold strip, colours, removing obstructions and adjusting the inside layout. Structural changes are rarely needed.
Should the main door open inward or outward?
Inward, ideally clockwise. It is also recommended to be the largest door in the house.
What should not be in front of the main door?
A pole, tree, pillar, sharp building corner, staircase going down, toilet door, dustbin or shoe clutter directly in front of the door is traditionally avoided.
Is online vastu consultation possible for the main door?
Yes. With a floor plan, the facing direction and a few photos, the door position and fixes can be checked online.
