Vastu Shastra is the traditional Indian science of space and direction. It explains how the placement of rooms, doors, water, fire and open spaces in relation to the eight directions affects the wellbeing of the people using that space.

Vastu works with the five elements (pancha bhoota) — earth, water, fire, air and space — and their natural zones in a building. For example, the north-east is associated with water and is kept light and open, the south-east with fire (the kitchen's ideal zone), and the south-west with earth (stability — ideal for the master bedroom). When important activities sit in unsuitable zones, people often notice stress, health concerns, money blocks or conflict. A vastu consultation identifies these imbalances and corrects them.

Every major zone and function of the property is checked against its direction — starting with the entrance and centre, then each room.

Most vastu defects can be balanced without breaking walls. Structural change is the last option, not the first.

Common non-structural corrections include:

• Changing how a room is used (e.g. a store room instead of a bedroom)
• Repositioning the bed, desk, stove, safe or seating
• Colours suited to each zone's element
• Elemental balancing with metal strips, mirrors, plants, water or lights in specific zones
• Clearing the north-east and centre of heavy objects and clutter

Every correction comes in a prioritised list — critical, important, optional — so you know what to do first.

Vastu works for flats and rented homes too. You can't move walls, but sleeping direction, furniture, room use, colours and elemental corrections are fully in your control.

For apartments, the facing of your flat's main door and the internal zones matter more than the building as a whole. In rented homes, Narinder suggests only removable, landlord-friendly changes.

In commercial spaces, vastu focuses on the areas that drive decisions and money: the entrance, the owner's seat, the cash counter and storage.

• Owner / decision-maker's seat: generally in the south-west, facing north or east
• Cash counter or locker: positioned to open towards the north
• Entrance and reception: welcoming, unblocked and well lit
• Staff seating, meeting room and storage: placed by function and zone

The best time for vastu is before you buy a flat or finalise a building plan — corrections cost nothing on paper and a lot after construction.
