Kundli Matching for Marriage

Kundli matching for marriage compares the birth charts of two people to understand how well their lives will fit together. Narinder goes beyond the 36-point gun milan score — he checks manglik, nadi and bhakoot dosh, both partners' seventh house, the Navamsa chart and the dashas you will each run after marriage. The result is a clear, honest view of the match, so families can decide with confidence rather than fear.

What Is Kundli Matching (Kundli Milan)?

Kundli matching — also called kundli milan or horoscope matching for marriage — is the Vedic method of checking compatibility between two people by comparing their birth charts before marriage.

It traditionally starts with Ashtakoota gun milan, a scoring system based on both partners' Moon signs and birth stars (nakshatras). A complete matching then studies each person's full chart, because a marriage is affected by much more than the Moon alone — career, health, family life and the timing of events all play a part.

Details needed for matching

Date, exact time and place of birth of both people. If one person's birth time is unknown, see matching without birth time below.

Gun Milan — the 36-Point System

Gun milan scores compatibility out of 36 across eight areas (kootas). Each koota looks at one part of married life, and the higher-weighted ones — Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) — matter most.

KootaMax pointsWhat it looks at
Varna1Spiritual and ego compatibility
Vashya2Mutual attraction and influence
Tara3Fortune and wellbeing after marriage
Yoni4Physical and intimate compatibility
Graha Maitri5Mental compatibility — friendship of Moon-sign lords

Bhakoot7Emotional bond, family happiness and prosperity

How many gunas should match for marriage?

Traditionally, 18 or more out of 36 is considered acceptable, 24–32 is a good match, and above 32 is excellent. Scores between 15 and 18 are borderline and need a careful look at the full charts.

Doshas Checked in Kundli Matching

Three doshas get the most attention in matching — manglik, nadi and bhakoot. Each one has classical exceptions, so finding a dosha is only the first step; checking whether it actually applies is what matters.

Manglik dosh

Manglik (Mangal) dosh is formed when Mars sits in certain houses of the chart (commonly the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th). It is checked from the ascendant, the Moon and Venus. When both partners are manglik, it is traditionally considered balanced, and many charts have placements that reduce or cancel it. Narinder checks both charts before drawing any conclusion. See Dosh Nivaran Puja & Remedies for balancing remedies.

Nadi dosh

Nadi dosh occurs when both partners have the same nadi, which gives 0 out of 8 in the Nadi koota. Classical texts list several exceptions — for example, when the nakshatras or their padas differ in specific ways. It should be judged by an experienced astrologer, not just a calculator. *(Health-related concerns should always be discussed with a doctor.)*

Bhakoot dosh

Bhakoot dosh arises when the Moon signs of the two partners fall in a 2–12, 5–9 or 6–8 relationship from each other. It is traditionally considered cancelled when the lords of both Moon signs are the same planet or are friends.

Beyond the Score — What a Complete Matching Includes

Gun milan only uses the Moon and birth star. Two couples with the same score can have very different marriages, so Narinder also compares the deeper parts of both charts.

  • Seventh house and its lord — the main house of marriage in each chart
  • Venus and Jupiter — significators of love and marriage
  • Navamsa (D9) chart — the divisional chart for marriage and long-term partnership
  • Dasha compatibility — which planetary periods both of you will run after marriage
  • Ascendant and Moon compatibility — day-to-day understanding and emotional tuning
  • Marriage timing — favourable periods and, once the match is final, guidance on a suitable time

Low Gun Score? What to Do

A low score is not an automatic "no". Many matches below 18 work well once the full charts are studied, and some high-score matches have serious issues the score doesn't show.

If your score is low, Narinder checks: which kootas are missing points and whether those areas are supported elsewhere in the charts; whether any dosha is cancelled; and how the Navamsa and dashas compare. You get a clear view of the real strengths and risks — and, where useful, simple remedies — instead of a decision based on a single number.

Kundli Matching Without Birth Time

If one partner's birth time is unknown, matching is still possible — but its precision depends on what is known.

  • Date and place known, time unknown: Moon sign is usually known, so much of gun milan can be done. Ascendant-based checks (like the 7th house) become less reliable. If the Moon changed nakshatra on that day, both possibilities are checked.
  • Only name known: Traditional name-based matching uses the first syllable of the name to assign a nakshatra. It is a rough guide only and is not as reliable as a birth-chart match.
  • Rectification: For important decisions, birth time can be estimated from major life events.

Kundli Matching for Love Marriage

Many couples who have already chosen each other still want to know their compatibility — not to decide yes or no, but to understand challenges and prepare for them.

For love marriages, Narinder focuses on how the two charts support each other, which areas may need effort, suitable timing for the wedding, and simple remedies if any dosha is present. The approach is supportive, not judgemental.

How Kundli Matching Online Works

Kundli matching online by an astrologer works exactly like meeting face to face, because it is based only on both partners' birth details.

  1. Share both birth details on WhatsApp — date, time and place of birth for both.
  2. Detailed comparison — gun milan, doshas, 7th house, Navamsa and dashas.
  3. Consultation — with the couple or the family, on a phone call or Zoom.
  4. Clear conclusion — strengths, concerns, remedies (if needed) and timing.

Kundli Matching FAQs

How many gunas should match for marriage?
18 out of 36 is traditionally the minimum, 24–32 is good and above 32 is excellent. The final decision should still be based on the full charts, not the score alone.
Can a manglik marry a non-manglik?
Often yes. Manglik dosh is reduced or cancelled in many charts by other placements. Both charts need to be checked before deciding.
Is nadi dosh always serious?
No. Nadi dosh has several classical exceptions. An astrologer should check whether it actually applies to your pair.
Can you match kundlis if the birth time is not known?
Yes, partly. With date and place, Moon-sign based matching is possible; with only names, a rough name-based match can be done. Accuracy improves with the exact time.
What should we do if the gun milan score is low?
Don't reject the match on the score alone. Get the full charts compared — the missing points may be supported by other factors, and doshas may be cancelled.
Is kundli matching useful for love marriage?
Yes. It helps a couple understand their strengths and challenges and choose a good time for the wedding.
Can kundli matching be done online?
Yes. Share both birth details on WhatsApp and the consultation can be done on phone or video call.
What is the difference between gun milan and kundli matching?
Gun milan is the 36-point score based on the Moon and nakshatras. Kundli matching is the complete comparison of both charts, which includes gun milan plus doshas, houses, Navamsa and dashas.
Is 18 gun enough for marriage?
18 out of 36 is the traditional minimum. With 18–24 gun the match is usually accepted if Nadi, Bhakoot, manglik dosh and the 7th house are fine. The total alone should not decide.
What is bhakoot dosh?
Bhakoot dosh occurs when the two Moon signs are in a 2-12, 6-8 or 5-9 relationship, giving 0 of 7 points. It is usually cancelled when both Moon signs share the same lord or the lords are friends.
Does gun milan show when we will get married?
No. Gun milan measures compatibility between two charts. Marriage timing comes from each person's 7th house, dasha and transits.
