Mahadasha and Antardasha Explained (With Example)
By Narinder, Vedic astrologer · Updated · 5 min read

Key takeaways
- Mahadasha = main period · Antardasha (bhukti) = sub-period · Pratyantar = sub-sub-period.
- Vimshottari total = 120 years, always in the same order starting from your Moon nakshatra's lord.
- Antardasha length = MD years × AD years ÷ 120.
- Results depend on the planet's house, sign, strength and lordship in *your* chart — not on the planet's reputation.
- The transition between two dashas is often a time of visible change.

A mahadasha is a long planetary period in Vedic astrology during which one planet's results dominate your life; an antardasha is a smaller sub-period inside it, ruled by another planet. In the standard Vimshottari system, the nine planets share a 120-year cycle — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years. Your first mahadasha is set by the nakshatra of your Moon at birth, and each antardasha lasts (mahadasha years × antardasha years) ÷ 120.
People hear "Rahu ki mahadasha chal rahi hai" or "Shani ki dasha shuru hogi" and assume the worst. In reality, the same dasha can be the best period of one person's life and a hard one for another. Here is how the system works.
The Vimshottari Dasha Order
| Order | Planet | Mahadasha (years) | Nakshatras it rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ketu | 7 | Ashwini, Magha, Mula |
| 2 | Venus (Shukra) | 20 | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha |
| 3 | Sun (Surya) | 6 | Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha |
| 4 | Moon (Chandra) | 10 | Rohini, Hasta, Shravana |
| 5 | Mars (Mangal) | 7 | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta |
| 6 | Rahu | 18 | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha |
| 7 | Jupiter (Guru) | 16 | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| 8 | Saturn (Shani) | 19 | Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| 9 | Mercury (Budh) | 17 | Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati |

How Your First Mahadasha Is Decided
- Find your Moon nakshatra from your kundli.
- The lord of that nakshatra gives your first mahadasha.
- The balance depends on how far the Moon has travelled through the nakshatra. If the Moon is halfway through, half of that planet's years remain at birth.
This is why an accurate birth time matters: the Moon moves about 13° a day, so even an hour shifts the dasha balance by months.
How to Calculate Antardasha
Every mahadasha is split into nine antardashas, starting with the mahadasha planet itself and then following the same order.
Formula: antardasha length (years) = mahadasha years × antardasha years ÷ 120
| Example | Calculation | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn MD – Saturn AD | 19 × 19 ÷ 120 | ≈ 3 years |
| Jupiter MD – Jupiter AD | 16 × 16 ÷ 120 | ≈ 2 years 1½ months |
| Rahu MD – Venus AD | 18 × 20 ÷ 120 | 3 years |
| Venus MD – Sun AD | 20 × 6 ÷ 120 | 1 year |
A Worked Example
An example chart (not a real client): born in January 2000, Moon at the middle of Rohini nakshatra.
- Rohini is ruled by the Moon → first dasha is Moon. Halfway through → 5 of 10 years remain.
- Moon MD ends ~2005 → Mars MD (7 yrs) to ~2012 → Rahu MD (18 yrs) to ~2030 → Jupiter MD to ~2046.
- Inside Rahu MD: Rahu–Rahu, Rahu–Jupiter, Rahu–Saturn, Rahu–Mercury, Rahu–Ketu, Rahu–Venus (~2023–2026), then Rahu–Sun (~2026–2027).
So in 2026 this person moves from Rahu–Venus into Rahu–Sun. Whether that is good depends on where Rahu, Venus and the Sun sit in their chart — for example, a Sun ruling the 10th house could bring a career push.
How to Read a Dasha's Results
- House and lordship: a planet brings results of the houses it occupies and rules. Saturn ruling the 9th and 10th (for Taurus lagna) usually gives a strong dasha.
- Strength: exalted, own-sign or well-aspected planets give smoother periods; debilitated or afflicted ones need care.
- MD–AD relationship: if the two planets are friendly and well placed from each other, the sub-period is easier.
- Transits: Saturn and Jupiter transits (gochar) time the events that the dasha promises.

Common Myths
- "Rahu/Saturn dasha is always bad." — Not true. For many charts these are periods of growth, foreign travel or career rise.
- "Jupiter dasha is always good." — Not if Jupiter rules difficult houses or is weak in your chart.
- "Online dasha dates are exact." — They are only as accurate as your birth time.
Know What Your Next Dasha Brings
Most people get the most value from knowing which dasha is coming next and preparing early — for career, marriage or money decisions. See Kundli Reading, or book a 1:1 session. Saturn periods often overlap with Sade Sati, and marriage timing uses dashas too — read Shaadi Kab Hogi.
