Nadi Dosh Explained: Meaning, Myths and Cancellation

By Narinder, Vedic astrologer · Updated · 5 min read

Nadi dosh — the three nadis Adi, Madhya and Antya

Key takeaways

  • Nadi depends only on the Moon nakshatra — 27 nakshatras, 9 in each nadi.
  • Same nadi = 0/8 points = nadi dosh. Different nadi = full 8 points.
  • It is cancelled in several cases (same rashi/different nakshatra, same nakshatra/different rashi or pada, and more).
  • Claims that nadi dosh "causes" childlessness or illness are beliefs, not medical facts.
  • Remedies are traditional: Mahamrityunjaya jap, nadi dosh puja, daan.

Nadi dosh occurs in kundli matching when the bride and groom have the same nadi — Adi, Madhya or Antya — which is decided by their Moon nakshatra. Nadi carries 8 of the 36 gun in Ashtakoot matching, the highest of any koot, so the same nadi scores 0 out of 8. Traditional texts also list clear cancellations: for example, the same rashi with different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra in different rashis or padas. Nadi dosh alone is not a reason to reject a match; the whole chart decides.

Families often panic when a match shows "nadi dosh" on an online calculator. In practice, many of these cases are cancelled once an astrologer checks the full details. Here's how it works.

What Is Nadi in Kundli Matching?

Nadi is the eighth and last koot of Ashtakoot (guna) matching. Each of the 27 nakshatras belongs to one of three nadis, traditionally linked to the three doshas of Ayurveda:

The three nadis and their nine nakshatras each: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) and Antya (Kapha)

If both partners fall in the same row, the match has nadi dosh. For the full 36-point system, read 36 Gun Milan: Kitne Gun Milne Chahiye?

Why Nadi Gets 8 Points

Traditionally, nadi represents physical and genetic compatibility — the health of the couple and their children. That is why it carries the most weight. This is a traditional view; there is no medical evidence that a nadi mismatch affects health or fertility. If health is a real concern, a doctor and simple medical tests are the right place to go.

When Is Nadi Dosh Cancelled?

Classical texts list several exceptions (nadi dosh parihar). The most commonly used:

ConditionResult
Same rashi, different nakshatraCancelled
Same nakshatra, different rashiCancelled
Same nakshatra, different pada (charan)Usually considered cancelled
Moon-sign lords are the same or close friendsReduced
Strong Bhakoot and Graha Maitri scoresReduced in practice

Astrologers differ on some of these, which is why the same pair can get different verdicts from different calculators. A human check looks at the actual nakshatra padas, not just the total.

Myths About Nadi Dosh

  • "Nadi dosh means no children." — Not true. It is an old belief about compatibility, not a medical prediction.
  • "Nadi dosh means the marriage will fail." — No single koot decides a marriage. The 7th house, Venus/Jupiter and dasha matter far more.
  • "Nadi = blood group." — A popular modern claim with no basis in classical texts or medicine.
  • "0 in nadi means reject the match." — Not if it's cancelled, and not if the rest of the charts support each other.

A Worked Example

An example pair (not real clients): the groom's Moon is in Rohini (Vrishabh), the bride's in Krittika pada 2 (Vrishabh).

  • Both nakshatras are Antya nadi → the calculator shows 0/8 and "nadi dosh".
  • But both Moons are in the same rashi (Vrishabh) with different nakshatras → the dosh is cancelled by the first rule.
  • Final view: nadi is not a problem; the decision rests on the 7th house and the other koots.

Traditional Remedies

When nadi dosh is present and not cancelled, but the rest of the match is strong, families often go ahead with remedies:

  1. Mahamrityunjaya mantra jap (often 1.25 lakh, done by a priest, or a daily mala by the couple).
  2. Nadi dosh nivaran puja before marriage.
  3. Daan — gold, grain or clothes to a Brahmin or the needy, as advised.
  4. Simple daily practices: respect, patience and communication — the remedies that actually hold a marriage together.

See Dosh Nivaran Puja & Remedies for how remedies are chosen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the remedy for nadi dosh?
Traditional remedies include Mahamrityunjaya jap, nadi dosh nivaran puja and daan, chosen after checking both charts.
